Linda-maree Conyard

I never knew the power of connecting with our ancestral field until I discovered Family Constellation Work around 2010 and immediately fell in love with it. So much so that I trained as a facilitator and have been using it to explore my own family system as well as using it with clients. I've also used it to explore my business and work with others on their businesses. This work is such a gift to the world. The full potential of the depth of healing this work offers is yet to be fully recognised.

In this edition of Trauma Bytes, we'll explore:

  • Ancestral Influences;
  • Ancestral Patterns; and
  • Mindfulness Practice to open up to our Ancestors.

Opening ourselves up to our ancestral healing allows a deeper understanding of the patterns we find ourselves entangled in. Bert Hellinger's systemic approach sheds light on the profound influence our ancestors wield on our present lives.

“You are the result of the love of thousands.” —Linda Hogan

1. Ancestral Influences
At a profound Soul level, we are intricately connected to the collective journey of our ancestors. While our conscious minds may not always grasp the depth of this connection, the Soul recognises the complexities of lives lived and stories untold. Beyond names and dates, there exists a shared legacy—a tapestry woven with the threads of joy, struggle, triumph, loss, success, failure, and resilience. Acknowledging this soul-level connection invites us to step into a broader understanding of our place in the grand narrative of humanity.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, the threads of our existence that connect us to our ancestors go unnoticed. As a society, our awareness tends to extend to our immediate familial circles—perhaps knowing our grandparents and, if fortunate, glimpsing into the lives of our great-grandparents. Yet, beyond the tangible branches of our family tree lies an intricate web of connections, binding us to the love and resilience of generations long past.

Bert Hellinger's work emphasises the significance of acknowledging and reconciling with the energies and unresolved issues carried by our ancestors. These influences are not merely stories of the past; they shape, they imprint that echo through generations, impacting our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

Additionally, Bert Hellinger's work illuminates the profound impact of transgenerational trauma—wounds carried across generations, etching themselves into the very fabric of our being. The shadows of trauma are silent whispers of pain, unspoken sorrows, and unresolved wounds that can find their way into our lives, often operating in the background, unnoticed. These ancestral imprints influence not only how we perceive the world but also how we navigate its challenges. Unresolved traumas from our ancestors can manifest as repetitive patterns in our lives, even when we consciously strive for different outcomes.

2. Ancestral Patterns
Pause for a moment and let the realisation that we are the living embodiment of the love, choices, and sacrifices of thousands sink in. It has taken an intricate interplay of lives, a symphony of human experiences, for each one of us to come into being. The laughter of one generation, the tears of another, the hopes, dreams, and silent whispers of those who walked before us, all converging in the miracle of our existence.

In this moment of reflection, we stand at the intersection of time, a living testament to the resilience and love that has echoed through the ages.

This unconscious dance with ancestral trauma plays out in the patterns of our thoughts, behaviours, and relationships. We may grapple with unexplained fears, self-sabotaging tendencies, or recurring challenges that seem to have no clear origin in our own experiences. Unbeknownst to us, these may be the echoes of ancestral pain seeking resolution through the vehicle of our lives. It's a silent inheritance, that continues until we bring it into the light of conscious awareness.

Ancestral experiences can unwittingly steer us toward repeating patterns, even when our conscious desires diverge. This repetition is not a matter of choice but a manifestation of our love for and loyalty to our ancestors. These patterns may manifest in relationships, health, our work or business or broader life themes.

The unconscious repetition of ancestral patterns is akin to a silent inheritance through our Soul connection, passed down through the generations. Family Constellation Work gives us the perfect skills to work with our ancestral field and find the healing path that can free us from the burden we carry out of love and loyalty.

3. Mindfulness Practices to Open Up To Our Ancestors
This information may be new to you and be a little confusing. Let the newness of what is shared be exactly that. Be open to understanding whatever you understand a leave the rest. I do a lot of work in this area with Family Constellations which may call to you. There is a link below to read more on my website if your curiosity is piqued.

One thing that can be a bit challenging for people is separating what they know of the ancestor, whether alive or deceased and the goodness of the Soul of the ancestor. In Family Constellation Work, we have the view that we all carry some burden from our ancestral field, and we do this out of loyalty and love. This can be challenging when the experience of the ancestor is anything but loyal and loving.

Gratitude for Ancestral Love
Deeply feeling gratitude for the love of thousands becomes a transformative practice. Whether we know the specifics of our ancestors' stories or not, we can acknowledge the collective energy that courses through our veins. It's a recognition of the silent contributions that have shaped us, the invisible hands that have guided our journey. Gratitude becomes a bridge that spans generations, connecting us to the love that transcends time and circumstance.

Mindful Ancestral Connection
Set aside intentional time for connecting with your ancestors mindfully. This can be done through meditation or reflection. Visualise a line of connection stretching through time, acknowledging the strengths as well as the challenges within your lineage. This practice fosters a mindful awareness of the interplay between ancestral energies and you.

The Unseen Landscape
Acknowledging and navigating this unseen landscape of ancestral trauma is an exploration of the narratives that may not be recorded in family albums or spoken at reunions yet influence the very fabric of our being. This journey invites us to be still and become connected with our ancestral field, listening to the whispers of information that may come.

Rituals of Recognition
Create simple rituals to honour and recognise your ancestors. This could involve lighting a candle, placing photos on an ancestral altar, or even sharing stories. Rituals provide a tangible way to bring mindful attention to the imprints carried by your lineage, opening opportunities for healing and transformation.

Rituals of Release
Craft rituals to release the burden of transgenerational trauma. This might involve symbolic acts like writing down inherited patterns and seeing if it is clear where this might belong in your ancestry. You might like to find a representation for what you have written, take a moment to gather the energy of what you want to return, and, in an honouring way, place the representation where you feel it belongs.

Family Constellation Exercises
Engage in family constellation exercises inspired by Bert Hellinger's work. These practices offer a visual representation of family dynamics, unveiling hidden entanglements. By witnessing and acknowledging these dynamics, we initiate a transformative process that can relieve us of the cycle of repetition.

As an example, you could use Mindful Ancestral Dialogue in a meditation or contemplation practice. Create a sacred space to connect with your ancestors, acknowledging their struggles and strengths. It's a conscious dialogue that transcends time, opening the door to healing. Be open and curious with your questions. Leave the mind available for what is necessary and let the Soul be the explorer.

Healing the Generational Wounds with Systemic Family Constellations
Healing ancestral trauma involves more than just personal introspection; it's a communal and transgenerational endeavour. By bringing awareness to the patterns we've inherited, we initiate a process of transformation that ripples backward and forward in time. This may involve therapeutic practices, rituals of acknowledgment, and intentional efforts to break the cycle of unconscious repetition. It's a journey of not only healing ourselves but contributing to the healing of our ancestral line.

These sessions offer a dynamic visualisation of family dynamics, revealing entanglements and allowing for healing insights. Having a session facilitated is very powerful and deeply healing. More information on this here.

In a world full of disconnection, cultivating an awareness of our ancestral connection offers a profound shift in perspective. It invites us to see ourselves not as isolated entities but as threads woven into the vast tapestry of human history. In this awareness, we find a profound interconnectedness—an acknowledgment that, indeed, we are the result of the love of thousands.
